Christianity is the only religion in the world whose object of worship died and resurrected. This is very significant because without the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the salvation plan would have been null and void.

Recall that we had earlier posited that the salvation plan was authenticated by the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ. Bible is clear that the solution to sin is the shedding of blood.

Hebrews 9:22 – And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

But why Jesus Christ?

  • None was found worthy except Him.

Revelations 5:4-9 – And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon..And one of the elders saith unto me, weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book…And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

  • He was without blemish and spot.

I Peter 1:18-19 – Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things…But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

Under the old covenant/agreement, the blood of bulls and calves were used for atonement. Atonement means to cover. So at best, sins were covered and this had to be done frequently to ‘appease’ God. This in itself was considered imperfect.

But under the new covenant/agreement, Jesus Christ came, without sin and guilt, offering up himself (once and for all) as our perfect eternal sacrifice; not just superficially/physically but eternally such that the root cause of sin/suffering was eternally destroyed forever and no longer ‘covered’.

Hebrews 7:27 – Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
